Understanding Resistance Bands

What Do the Different Coloured Resistance Bands Mean?

Resistance bands are a common exercise tool prescribed by physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, podiatrists, and personal trainers. But what do the different colours mean and how do you know which one to start with on your exercise journey?

Rule Of Thumb: Light Colours Typically Mean Lighter Resistance

Resistance bands are usually colour-coded to indicate different levels of resistance. While exact standards can vary between brands, a general rule of thumb is that lighter colours represent lighter resistance, and darker colours represent heavier resistance.

In simple terms, the colour of the band reflects how much force is required to stretch it. This is known as the length–tension relationship – the more a band is stretched, the more resistance it provides.

It’s important to note that the exact amount of resistance (often measured in pounds or kilograms) can differ between manufacturers. However, most systems follow a similar progression.

  • Yellow Resistance Band (lightest)
  • Red Resistance Band (light)
  • Green Resistance Band (medium)
  • Blue Resistance Band (medium-heavy)
  • Black Resistance Band (heavy)

How to choose the right one ?

Start with a lighter band and focus on good form. You should feel some resistance but still be able to move comfortably and with control. As exercises start to feel easier, you can gradually move up to a heavier band.

It’s also completely normal to use different resistance levels for different exercises. For example, lighter bands for upper body movements and heavier bands for lower body work.
