Medicinal Cannabis: have your say

Last week (24/02/2016) the Australian Government passed legislation which saw amendments made to the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967 (Cth). These amendments established a licensing and permit scheme for the domestic cultivation and manufacture of medicinal cannabis. The Federal Health Minister, The Hon. Sussan Ley, stated that these changes will allow for “safe, legal and reliable supply of medicinal cannabis products for the management of painful and chronic conditions.”

Yesterday (29/02/2016), the Queensland Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, The Hon. Cameron Dick released for public consultation the Public Health (Medicinal Cannabis) Bill 2016 (Qld.). This proposed Bill seeks to provide Queensland Doctors with a clear process of accessing and prescribing medicinal cannabis. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk yesterday stated that “this Bill will create the most progressive laws in the country. We are setting up a robust framework to ensure medicinal cannabis products can be prescribed and dispensed to patients in Queensland.”

This proposed Queensland Bill is now open for community consultation. To have your say visit the Queensland Health website  www.health.qld.gov.au
