Self-management Courses
The three main courses conducted by Arthritis Queensland are:
- Arthritis Self-management Course (ASM)
- Osteoporosis Prevention and Self-management Program (OPSM)
- Chronic Disease Self-management Program (CDSM)
Self-management courses are designed to give the skills to lead active and satisfying lives, in spite of having arthritis, osteoporosis or other long-term health conditions.
These conditions can lead to symptoms such as pain, fatigue, depression, frustration and decreased fitness, making life seem an uphill battle.
Do you find:
- Your condition saps your energy levels?
- Your chronic condition leads to a depressed mood?
- You had to give up or stop doing things you want or like to do because of your condition?
At the self-management courses you will learn:
- How to manage your symptoms.
- How to lessen your frustration.
- How to fight fatigue.
- How to make daily tasks easier.
- How to enhance relationships with family, friends and health professionals.
- How to get more out of life!
The Arthritis Self-management course is held over six weeks and is run by two trained leaders. Many leaders have arthritis themselves and successfully use the techniques taught in the course.
Studies have shown that participants who have completed the course:
- Experience less pain and depression.
- Have less frequent doctor visits.
- Are physically and socially more active.
The Osteoporosis Prevention and Self-management course is held over four weeks. This course is designed for preventing and minimising the effects of osteoporosis.
It’s never too early or too late to do something about osteoporosis. The course is designed to provide information on building and maintaining strong bones throughout life whilst also informing how to minimise bone loss that is a natural part of the ageing process.
Not only does this course provide current information to enable you to make informed choices but also to build your confidence in making life style changes to improve your quality of life.
Chronic Conditions Self-management course
This course is held over six weeks and is aimed at any person who has one or more long-term health conditions, such as heart disease, arthritis, stroke, diabetes or another chronic condition.
Studies have shown that participants who have completed the course:
- Improve well-being and quality of life.
- Experience improved and sustained health gains.
- Use medications more effectively.
